Q: When did you first know you wanted to be a Fashion Stylist?
A: That’s a good question. I guess I always was one- even though I didn’t know it. I was a very introverted person in high school and university so I let my clothing do the talking for me. I did a ton of vintage shopping and was really creative with my clothing- always altering it or finding unexpected new ways to wear things. After University I moved to Los Angeles on a mission to be a Set Designer when I met a Stylist who changed my life. He showed me what fashion styling really was. He mentored me, groomed me and ultimately helped to make me the person I am today.
Q: How would you describe your personal Style?
A: My style is a combination of high and low. On work days it’s definitely a bit more low- I have to be comfortable and able to run around like crazy for 12-14 hours at a time. Bending over putting on models shoes, adjusting their pant legs, dragging my wardrobe rack through casinos and running back and forth from set to a prep room doesn’t really facilitate the most fashion forward of looks. In my personal life I love mixing high and low. I’d say it’s 1 part Zooey Deschanel, 1 part Mindy Kaling and a dash of Kelly Osbourne.
Q: What does fashion mean to you?
A: Fashion communicates YOUR message. It shows how you feel, coveys your mood, shows your creativity and speaks volumes about what your passions are.
Q: What do you think has helped you most in your career – experience or education?
A: Experience IS Education. You learn something every time you step onto a set. Whether it’s your interpersonal communication skills, organization, when to speak up and when not to or simply the importance of packing a snack.
Q: Best advice you could give an aspiring Stylist?
A: Take the time to learn the ropes. Just because you have a cute personal style doesn’t mean you are ready to be a full-blown stylist. Styling involves so much more than selecting a cute outfit. You need to know the art of dealing with clients, how to interpret the clients vision, time management and budgeting. Often times you are on something that resembles a scavenger hunt like looking for bikini’s and linen clothing in November or trying to locate a Parka in July.
Q: What inspires you in the fashion world?
A: I am obsessed with Alexander McQueen! I tend to be drawn to British designers and trends. Alexander McQueen, Erdem, L.K.Bennett, Ted Baker, Paul Smith, fish and chips, a pint of lager…
Q: What is your styling secret weapon?
A: Shapewear! The right shapewear can change your life! I won’t let my clients leave the house in a dress without ResultWear by dmondaine! It’s so pretty it looks more like lingerie than shapewear.
